manna cafe 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio – Feb. 5, 2013 – For more than 80 years, the State Auto Insurance Companies’ Christmas Corner, featuring the life-size Nativity display, has been a Central Ohio holiday tradition. State Auto founder Bob Pein began decorating State Auto’s home office building at Christmastime in 1931, and the tradition has continued nearly every year since that time.

In recent years, State Auto volunteers have offered hot chocolate, by donation, to visitors at the display. This popular addition has not only enhanced the experience for visitors, but also generated a significant amount in donations benefitting the Manna Café at the Broad Street United Methodist Church, located across the street from the State Auto building.

“When State Auto decided to offer complimentary hot chocolate to Nativity guests and also accept donations on behalf of the Manna Café, we’ve extended the gift of Christmas Corner with those who are in need throughout the year, and not just during the Christmas season,” said State Auto associate Michael Hurd, who coordinates the hot chocolate effort.

Hurd recently donated a check for $4,276.00 to the Manna Café, on behalf of Christmas Corner, with all funds collected last Christmas season.  With each weekly meal costing between $350 – 400, and feeding between 180 – 200 people, the donations translate to about 10 to 12 meals during the year.

“We feed about 8,000 people every year and all meals are funded by donations,” said Broad Street United Methodist Church Senior Pastor Lou Seipel.  “We obviously couldn’t do what we do without donations and volunteers, which State Auto provides.  Your generosity leaves me speechless and we are so grateful for this tremendous gift, not only to the Manna Café, but to the community at large.”
