State Auto, S.I.S. win ACORD awards

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- June 23, 2004 -- For the third consecutive year, and the fourth time in seven years, the State Auto Insurance Companies took top honors at the annual ACORD (Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development) convention, winning the award for Upload Company of the Year. The award is given to the company with the most total upload implementations during the year. State Auto first won the award in 1997, and again, in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Strategic Insurance Software, Inc. (S.I.S.), State Auto Financial Corporation's software/hardware development subsidiary, also won several awards, topping its performance in 2003, during which SIS was bestowed awards for XML Certification, Early Adopter and Accomplished Outsourcers for the SIS Print Service (ACORD form print engine licensed to carriers). This year, SIS received these same three awards, plus ones for inaugural Early Forms Adopter, and Increased Upload Vendor of the Year awards, both for its SEMCI Partner product.

Upload technology is the means by which insurance agents can transmit new policy applications and other information to their companies electronically. It reduces the time and trouble of paper applications and streamlines the policy issuance process, overall. (Closely related to this technology is the download application, whereby insurance companies can process and return the agencies' submissions to them.)

"We have long considered ourselves a leader in agency/company interface, and this award confirms it," said Noreen Johnson, VP, and Director of Information Technology. "Clearly, for a regional company of our size, we are in a quite enviable position within our industry."

Accepting the award at the convention for State Auto was Agency Interface Services Supervisor Debbie Segbers. SIS Systems Supervisor Nolan Davis, accepted the awards for SIS, saying, "this is our best year yet. It just goes to show you that with dedication toward achieving excellence, we can reach our goals."

The State Auto Insurance Group, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is engaged primarily in writing personal and commercial automobile, homeowners, commercial multi-peril, workers' compensation and fire insurance. The companies currently market their products through more than 22,000 independent agents associated with approximately 3,400 agencies in 26 states. Products are marketed primarily in the Midwest and Eastern United States, excluding New York, New Jersey and the New England states.
