Umbrella
Simply put, umbrella coverage is extra protection, above-and-beyond your auto and/or home insurance coverage. State Auto’s Umbrella policy offers additional limits of liability from $1 million to $5 million.
Why would you need umbrella coverage? Well, say a neighbor slips and falls on your sidewalk and is injured – and then sues. Suppose the court awards $800,000 to the neighbor, but you only have $300,000 of liability insurance under your homeowners policy. You would be responsible for the additional $500,000. But if you happen to have a $1 million umbrella policy you would be completely covered and your umbrella policy would then pay the additional $500,000.
