Moratorium declared on Illinois policy cancellations and non-renewals in disaster areas - UPDATED

To State Auto’s Illinois policyholders:

On June 17, 2008, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Insurance, issued a bulletin asking companies doing business in Illinois to implement a 60-day moratorium on cancellations and nonrenewals. In addition, insurers are requested to grant an extension of any policy provision that imposes a time limit on an insured or claimant.

The provisions of the bulletin are in effect until August 18, 2008, and apply to policyholders affected by recent flooding in any county declared a state or federal disaster area. Counties affected are identified on the Illinois Flood Report Web site at http://www.ready.illinois.gov/. State Auto is pleased to comply with the Insurance Department's request.

During this period, we will continue to produce Cancellation and Nonrenewal Notices such as the enclosed notice. If you are a policyholder located in a designated disaster area and are impacted by the recent flooding, you may request that State Auto continue your insurance coverage through August 18, 2008. If your policy has been canceled for nonpayment of premium, you may also request an extension of time to pay your insurance premiums due during this period. Please contact your agent, or call our Payment Services Department at 1-800-444-9950 (Option 3), to make arrangements.

In addition, State Auto will comply with the Department's request to provide an extension of time regarding policy provisions that impose time limits.

Should you have any problems or need to file a complaint regarding any disaster-related dispute or issue, please contact the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Insurance, toll-free complaint hotline at 1-800-445-5364; or file a complaint on-line at: http://www.idfpr.com/doi/Complaints/Complaints.asp.

We recognize that the recent flooding represents great hardship for those affected and the simple acts of everyday life are no longer simple. We are pleased to work with our agency partners and policyholders to provide assistance.
