Each year, candidates are recruited and hired into our five regional branches located in Nashville, Tenn., Indianapolis, Ind., Columbus, Ohio, Austin, Texas and Baltimore, Md. The first few months of training are held at our Corporate Headquarters in Columbus, Ohio (housing is provided).
While in Columbus, associates participate in classroom training that is focused on insurance coverage and underwriting. Time will also be spent with our partners in Claims and Loss Control Departments to gain understanding of the teamwork involved in producing profitable results. Candidates then return to the region in which they were hired and are paired with a mentor and a technical training partner for the balance of the year.
Selected individuals are expected to continuously develop and strengthen their skills to ensure success in their underwriting position and to position themselves for career advancement within the company. As part of skill development, the Associate in Underwriting (AU) and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) professional insurance designations are to be completed within five years. Study materials and exam costs are covered by State Auto.
In addition to insurance-based technical training, candidates are provided training in negotiations, sales and business relationship development.
