It's something we all try to avoid, but it could happen someday - you run out of gas or your vehicle breaks down for some reason while you're driving and you must pull off of to the side of the road. What to do? Here are some important things to keep in mind.

Think safety first

• Pull over as far as you can from the side of the road, while staying on level ground.
• If you can't pull off the road because your car is broken down, turn on your emergency flashers.
• Determine the safest place to remain until the situation is resolved. If you're able to get away from traffic, it's safest to remain in your vehicle with the doors locked and windows almost closed.

Call for help/waiting for help

• If you have a cell phone, use it to call AAA if you're a member, or 9-1-1 if you have no other options.
• Emergency responders have flashing lights and can position their vehicles in a way to help protect everyone while a repair is being made.
• Visibility is critical - turn on emergency flashers, or use flares.
• Keep a reflective vest inside your car and wear it as needed.
• Never stand behind or directly in front of your vehicle as other roadway users may have trouble seeing you.
• Open the hood and tie a piece of bright fabric or something similar to your antenna.
• Wait until help arrives.
